The energy transition towards reduced CO2 emissions requires the substitution of fossil fuels with a widespread exploitation of renewable energy sources (e.g., the sun and the wind). However, the latter are intermittent and non-programmable. Thus, it is necessary a widespread integration of efficient, high-capacity, compact and long-lasting energy storage systems to close the space and time gaps between the production of renewable energy and its consumption by end users.

The invention is concerned with hybrid Zinc-Iodine Flow Batteries (HZIFB).
